Abstract

A modified trapping technique for the entomopathogenic nematodes was tested for its efficacy in recovery of naturally occuring insect parasitic nematodes, optimum time of removal of baited traps from the soil and at the same time prevention of attack by predatory ant,Solenopsis geminata (Fabr.). The highest nematode recovery (13.5 %) and the least ant attack were achieved on fourth day of trapping. Modified trapping technique was found effective in the prevention of predatory ant attack which subsequently increased the efficacy of nematode recovery.

Abstract

The ladybird beetle Curinus coeruleus Mulsant was introduced into India from Thailand during October 1988 for the control of subabul psyllid Heteropsylla cubana Crawford (Jalali and Singh, 1989). This predator is a voracious feeder of the psyllids (Nakahara et al., 1987). Apart from H.cubana, the beetle is also known to feed on Nipaecoccus nipae (Maskell) (Nakahara et al., 1987), Planococcus citri (Risso), Coccus viridis (Green) (Wagiman et al., 1990), Chrysomphalus aonidum (Linnaeus), Aphis nerii Boyer de Fonscolombe, Aleurodicus dispersus Russel (Funasaki et al., 1988) and Aphis gossypii Glover (Napompeth and Maneeratana, 1990) in other countries. Hence a study was conducted in the laboratory to find out the host range of C. coeruleus in India.

Abstract

Curinus coeruleus Mulsant, a ladybird beetle has been Introduced Into India for the control of the subabul psyllid Heteropsylla cubana Crawford. It has established Itself In the subabul fields of the University or Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. In the present Investigation, population dynamics of the predator and the prey along with weather parameters were studied. The study revealed the dependence of H. cubana on weather parameters partlcularly rainfall. The population or psyllids gradually declined during summer (May) which was followed by the decline or predator population. Build up of the psyllid population started with the onset of rains, which favoured emergence of new flush of subabul during the third week or May. C. coeruleus populatlon also gradually Increased after the psyllid build up. Partial regression coefficient revealed a strong negative correlation between adult predators and wind speed. Predator adult population had a significant positive relationship with maximum temperature (r = 0.6958), minimum temperature (r = 0.5378)and hours of sunshine (r = 0.6273) but significant negative, relationship with relative humidity (r = -0.7352), psyllid nymphs (r = -0.4250) and wind speed (r = -0.9093). Multiple regression equation was also fitted to predict the predator adult population.
